Small Car Market Will Look Radically Different by 2011

leave a comment

Everyone knows that the US automotive market is in an upheaval as customers shirk big trucks and SUVs for smaller cars and crossover vehicles. In the midst of this sea change, every automaker who sells cars in the US and Canada is in the process of transforming their model lines to bring an even greater number of fuel efficient vehicles our way.

By the time the calendar flips over to 2011, the model line ups for most manufacturers will have been radically changed. Please read on for a primer of what’s to come:

General Motors – As the automaker with the most sales as well as the steepest losses, GM is scrambling to change its line up across its eight brands quickly. Expect the Hummer brand to be gone by the time 2011 rolls around, leaving GM with seven brands to work on. The biggest changes will be with its quintessentially American brand, Chevrolet, where the plug-in hybrid Volt will be on the scene, the 45 mpg Cruze will replace the Cobalt, and as yet unnamed Scion like vehicle will also be introduced. Expect some of these changes to spread to Buick, Pontiac, and Saturn.

Toyota – Who would have thought that Toyota would ever be so pummeled? No, the automaker isn’t racking up multi-billion dollar losses, but their fleet is too top heavy with trucks and SUVs. Expect Toyota to continue its hybrid dominance, spreading this technology across all model lines.

Ford – Ford has already tipped its hand where the automaker is going, with plans to introduce six European models to the US market. The Fiesta will lead the way followed by an all-new Focus. Expect both Mercury and Lincoln to get some kind of compact cars and get used to the Escape being the Ford brand’s best selling SUV.

Nissan – Like Toyota, Nissan needs to concentrate on smaller cars. Unlike Toyota, their sales are doing quite well. Nissan plans to beat GM to the market with its own Chevy Volt type vehicle, perhaps as early as Spring 2010.

Chrysler – The smallest of the Big 3 automakers, Chrysler needs a lot of help to shift production to smaller cars. Fortunately, the automaker will be tapping its relationship with Nissan to get some of that done, but it’ll probably take at least one Chinese automaker, Chery Automotive, to help the company deliver a truly small car to the US market.

Honda – Recently passing Chrysler to take over the #4 spot in the US market, Honda’s best offering will be here very soon. The Honda Insight, a five passenger hybrid car, will go on sale early in 2009. Priced $3000 less than the Prius, the Insight will deliver 60 mpg and be the leading edge of a number of small, economical models that will dominate Honda within two years time.

Best of the Rest – Look for VW to offer an all-new sedan for the US market by the time its new Chattanooga plant goes online in early 2011. Expect that Kia and Hyundai will increase their small car offerings and at prices below its competition, while Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru overhaul their line ups to incorporate additional gas saving technologies.

Ultimately, the consumer will be the winner when the new cars come to the market. Even if gas prices spike upwards, many drivers will find that turning in their late model cars for a new compact will pay off quicker then they think. Cars offering exceptional fuel economy and costing less to run.

Look Out for Honda in 2007

leave a comment

The founder of Honda Automobiles, Soichiro Honda, was born in 1906. He grew up helping his father repair bicycles in the little town of Komyo. At 16, he headed to Tokyo, 270 kilometers away, to take an apprenticeship at an automobile repair shop. He took up racing and, after a violent crash, he was convinced by his wife to retire from the sport. The repair business alone was not enough to keep him occupied. This restlessness led to his venture into piston ring manufacturing in 1937.

By the early 1950s, Honda had developed into an engine manufacturer. Honda’s inventive spirit led the company to develop class-leading engines for Japan’s motorcycle industry. Honda met Takeo Fujisawa by chance in 1948. The two men shared a desire for long-term investment, a rare trait in post-war Japan. They agreed to work together; Fujisawa invested his money and took on the marketing responsibilities and Honda continued on the technological side of the business. The Honda Motor Company was born in 1948.

Soichiro Honda did much of the market research for his products. This research went as far as traveling to races all over the world and examining the competition’s motorcycles. Once a benchmark was set with a competitive product, Honda would take this information home and strive to top that mark. Honda’s racing successes converted to sales successes. In 1959, Honda had topped the Japanese motorcycle sales chart with 285,000 units. Two years later, Honda was selling at rate of 100,000 units a MONTH!

Honda announced its intention to enter automobile production in the early 1960s and introduced the S360 sports car. When it was decided to begin exporting the Honda products, the United States was chosen as a key target. The first Honda motorcycles were introduced into the United States in 1959. By 1963, Honda was the top-selling brand of motorcycles in the United States. Today, Honda stands as the largest motorcycle manufacturer and the 9th largest automobile manufacturer in the world. With cars like the Civic S Hatchback, Prelude and Civic CRX, Honda became the first car maker to finish first, second and third in the Motor Trend Import Cars of the Year selections!

Here’s a peek at what they have in store for the model year 2007:

2007 Honda Accord

The changes to the seventh-generation Accord will be most noticeable at night, when the multiple LEDs in the taillights and center high-mounted stop light (CHMSL) are readily apparent. The CHMSL has been moved from the rear window to the rear edge of the trunk, where it acts as a small spoiler. The rear fenders are changed slightly from earlier models, as has the grille and front bumper. Improvements to intake and exhaust airflow have enabled Honda to find a few more horsepower in both Accord engines. The silky-smooth 3. 0-liter single overhead camshaft, 24-valve V6 is up four horsepower, for 244 at 6250 rpm, with maximum torque 211 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. Honda’s VTEC variable valve lift and timing system ensures optimum performance at all engine speeds, and there is a very healthy midrange surge of torque that is best taken advantage of by the six-speed gearbox.

2007 Honda Element

The 2007 Element is available in two versions, the LX and the EX. Both the Element LX and EX come equipped with the same 166-horsepower 2. 4-liter four-cylinder engine and new Drive-by-Wire electronic throttle control system, as well as a handy Maintenance Minder organizer whose name speaks for itself. With this seventh generation version, Honda will deliver a face-lifted SUV that features additional 10 horsepower, new five-speed automatic and a new set of standard safety equipment.

2007 Honda Fit

The 2007 Honda Fit is a triumph of creativity, proof that good ideas don’t have to be expensive. Both trim levels for this front-drive, five-door hatchback (the Fit is offered in base and Sport trim) feature a 1. 5-liter, 109-horsepower VTEC four-cylinder engine. Delivering 105 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm, it posted a 9. 3 second, 0-60 mph sprint. As if anticipating safety concerns from U. S. buyers, Honda has provided two key features standard on both the base and Sport models. Both trim levels now come with four-wheel antilock brakes and side curtain airbags.

2007 Honda Ridgeline

Honda’s pickup truck is a compact, five-passenger 4-dr crew cab with a 5-ft long cargo bed and standard all-wheel drive. Ridgeline has several design features unusual to pickups, including independent rear suspension and unibody construction. The tailgate drops down or swings out. The sole powertrain is a 255-hp V6 and a 5-speed automatic transmission. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover both seating rows and include rollover deployment. All models have front bucket seats and a 60/40 split rear bench with cushions that flip up to increase in-cab storage.
Soichiro Honda’s unique leadership has allowed the Honda Motor Company to become a world power in the automotive fields. Mr. Honda’s views went counter to the direction of his own government and yet his company has prospered. With innovation developed by Mr. Honda as a basis, the Honda Motor Company has become a technological force in the motorcycle and automobile industries in Asia, Europe, and North America.

All Cars Look the Same These Days, Right?

leave a comment

Wrong.

It’s true that many cars do look bland and boring, but have you taken a look at the Chrysler range recently? Whereas most mainstream manufacturers seem to always play safe, by designing cars that will offend no one, Chrysler are blazing their own trail, with a range that dares to be different yet still covers all of the main vehicle groups: hatchback, saloon, executive saloon, two-seater sports, and MPV.

Let’s start with the PT Cruiser hatchback, because it really epitomises Chryslers’ gung-ho approach. Although the quirky retro-futuristic design is a few year’s old now, it still looks as fresh as a daisy, and turns heads wherever it goes. The design has recently been refreshed with some judicious resculpting, and there are no fewer than ten variations to choose from, all at sensible prices. With a tall profile that enables a command-of-the-road driving position, plus flexible, versatile interior space, it really lives up to its name, because the PT prefix stands for ‘personal transportation’ – and that’s exactly what it is.

Need a premium family saloon? Take a look at the Sebring, a stylish, and, some say, sexy, four-door five-seater powered by three alternative engines: an economical yet gutsy 2. 0 diesel, a new 2. 0 petrol power plant and a new 2. 4 petrol automatic. From the distinctive signature grille, centre spine and fluted bonnet to the purposefully sculpted tail, the Sebring exudes sophistication and individuality. In a marketplace dominated by bland euro boxes, the Sebring is a welcome blast of fresh air.

But you don’t really want a family saloon, do you? Walk this way and let me introduce you to the Chrysler Crossfire. It has the sleekest, most beautiful, most aerodynamic body you’ve seen since Kiera Knightly emerged from the fountain in Atonement, with the added bonus of a smooth, responsive 3. 2 litre V6 engine that makes it go as fast as any human being should ever need to travel. And if you don’t want to blow-dry your hair in the wind, there’s a coupé version. Best of all, it only costs around £25-28,000 – fantastic value for such panache, performance, personality (and rarity), especially compared to its much more common and costly competitors.

Unfortunately, seven into two don’t go, so for large families, choosing the capacious seven-seater Voyager is a no-brainer – unless you need even more space and versatility (such as the new Stow ‘n Go seats, which adapt to create over 165 cubic feet of storage space) in which case the Grand Voyager will tick all the right boxes. Who said MPVs had to be ugly? These are smart, stylish, highly practical, state-of-the-art vehicles that drive like a car, ride like a limousine, and offer compelling value for money. In fact the biggest problem for Chrysler is that many potential buyers ignore them because they think that as they look so sleek and superior, they are far more expensive than they actually are. Prices start at just £19,000.

So now we come to the pièce de résistance, the Chrysler 300C. This is a serious executive limousine with a distinctive, perhaps even imperious presence, due in no small part to the dramatic design styling centred upon the bold grille and nicely weighted use of chrome. This is a vehicle for astute captains of industry and commerce who want to drive a quiet, refined and sophisticated vehicle that stands apart from the rest, but costs several thousand pounds less than its soulless rivals. All the desired power, performance and gadgetry are there, combined into a compellingly charismatic package that makes everything else on the road look rather ordinary.

I’m quite excited by the Chrysler range. Although the heritage and history is all there, this is a company looking and moving forward in a distinctly different way. The unique styling approach won’t appeal to everybody, but perhaps that’s the point?

Volvo Xc60: a Look at the Future

leave a comment

A couple more nights to go and the Detroit automotive show, which is much known as the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), would already be polishing off the last details and then opening its doors to the public. And with this grand event, Volvo Cars would also be sending out one of the newest vehicles in their range. And it is not just a restyle vehicle holding Volvo V70 parts, mind you.

The new Volvo vehicle is the Volvo XC60 and it is a concept vehicle. According to its creator, this vehicle would be the kind of transportation that the future would be having. In fact, this concept vehicle is going to be the basis for a new production vehicle sometime soon. This Volvo XC60 concept vehicle would soon be joining the ranks of the Volvo XC70 and the Volvo XC90 in the Volvo line of all wheel drive and cross country vehicles. Uniquely, the Volvo XC60 concept would be coming as a combination of both the all wheel drive feature and the sportiness and charm of a coupe.

People who are up to much adventure would certainly be loving this vehicle. In fact, the Volvo XC60 has been created and will be marketed so as to be able to target those people who love design, value, brand, as well as the latest automotive innovations and high technology features.

Steve Mattin is Volvo’s design director and he describes the Volvo XC60 concept vehicle as, “The XC60 Concept features a number of innovations that indicate how our cars will look in a few years time. It is time to once and for all forget about boxy Volvos. Instead, we will make our Scandinavian design heritage more emotional and radiant by adding sculptured, exciting shapes and innovative features. ” He also does continue by saying, “With more expressive and emotive shapes, if you can recognize a Volvo from fifty meters today, I want to get to the point where you will instant spot a Volvo from twice that distance in the future. ”

On the outside, you can expect the Volvo XC60 concept vehicle to be holding twenty inch wheels as well as scuff plates made of aluminum. Just the kind of look that the future will be having.

As a former news correspondent for an auto-related websites, Kevin has gathered extensive knowledge and experience in the automotive industry. This 34 year old father of three from Pennsylvania is a genuine car lover.
