First Pontiac G8 Prototypes Roll Off the Line

leave a comment

At this year’s Chicago Auto Show, Pontiac (also maker of top of the line Pontiac catalytic converter) – confirming its commitment to style and performance – introduced a show car version of the all-new, rear-wheel drive performance, the G8 GT.

The G8 is the first North American application of GM’s new global rear-wheel-drive architecture developed by Holden, GM’s Australian subsidiary.

The G8 show car gave everyone a peek of the highly anticipated production GT model, including use of the 362-horsepower (270 kW) 6. 0L V-8 engine and optional six-speed manual transmission. The show car also features some unique items not found on the production model, including twenty-inch “shadow chrome” wheels and performance tires, ride height lowered approximately half-inch, high-performance brake rotors with painted brake calipers, custom interior trim color, including a leather-wrapped dash, exclusive exterior paint color: Phantom Grey, and the concept of “modernized” Pontiac badge.

Last week, the first prototype of the Pontiac G8 rolled off General Motors’ Australia unit, GM Holden — ahead of a full production start later in the year. The rear-wheel-drive performance sedan is headed for the United States in early 2008.

Production model details

The 2008 Pontiac G8 lineup will offer two models: G8 and G8 GT. Each will come with a host of standard performance, convenience and safety features, including:

Four-wheel independent suspension

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control

Electronic stability control

18-inch aluminum wheels (19-inch wheels available with sport package)

Seat-mounted thorax air bags and dual-stage frontal air bags for front passengers, with automatic passenger sensing system

Roof rail side-impact air bags for both seating rows

OnStar

XM Satellite Radio

Power-adjustable front seats

Fog lamps

Chrome exhaust tips

Rear lip spoiler

A sport package will also be available for both models and adds features such as specific wheels – including 19-inch aluminum wheels and performance tires on GT – a rear wing spoiler, leather shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel and alloy pedals.

Production of the Pontiac G8 is scheduled to commence at the Holden plant in late 2007, bringing the production line to a maximum capacity rate of 620 cars per day.

The G8 will be the first car sold in the U. S. based on the Australia-developed new Zeta global GM architecture. This means that Holden’s Elizabeth plant is exporting to every continent in the world, with the exception of Antarctica.

Land Rover: the Time Line

leave a comment

The first Freelander has been available since 1998, and has been a big success throughout Europe. The Freelander is now Europe’s best selling 4×4. In 2001, other features were added to the Freelander such as improved engines and gearbox. Land Rover is known worldwide for it’s off the road performance. The Freelander has a smooth ride, is impressive off-the road, and is very secure. Although the prices are high, the reliability could be improved and could provide more space for drivers.

In 2006, the Freelander 2 was announced. The Freelander 2, has introduced 2 new engines, a 3. 2-litre straight-six petrol and a 2. 2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. Some of it’s changes from the original Freelander, is the unique ‘Terrain Response’ to make off-roading easier, also the full time intelligent system 4×4 for better fuel economy and traction, and the ‘Gradient Release Control’ which helps drivers when releasing the brakes on steep and slippery slopes. Other small helpful features include keyless starter button, bi-xenon headlamps and rain-sensing wipers too name few. Too many, it’s advantages are it’s superb ride and composed handling. Many people comment that the design and technologies of the Freelander are excellent but many buyers complain about the price compared to that of Freelander’s rivals. The Land Rover Freelander 2 prices range from £21,000 to £36,000.

After complaints about the original ‘Freelander’ lacking space for drivers, the Freelander 2 has more space for head, shoulder and legroom. A clever feature by Land Rover is the ‘stadium seating’, where the rear passengers are seated slightly higher than the front occupants as to see the outside world. The only disadvantage with the Freelander 2 is that it is now too large and struggles to fit in car washes, parking spaces etc. Due to this, it is hard to get around small villages, but perfect for motorways.

“No other compact 4×4 has anything like its total breadth of capability,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. “The Freelander 2 sets new standards in the sector, combining the advantages of a premium car with the attributes of a robust 4×4,

With the impact of the credit crunch and the rising prices, many people now use contract hire& leasing to purchase their cars. The contract hires ranges from £317 to £490 over 36 months for a Land Rover leasing Freelander 2.

leave a comment

Dongfeng Citroen’s second plant started to construct Oct. 2006 and the designed production is 150,000 units for first phase. This Nov. 17 the first C5 Citroen car rolled of line of the new plant. According to the joint venture, localized C5 will be powered by a 2. 3L VTCS engine and Tiptronic transmission. From the comparision with competitors and the pictures released by the joint venture. Styling of C5 is attractive and the price will be an last key issue for the car. reasonable specification and price will help the new standard car make a good start in the booming auto market. Standart car segment is the most profitable segment in China. International automakers all put great effort in this segment with their best products.

Honda’s Accord, Toyota’s Camry and Nissan’s Teana is the most competitive Japanese products. Passat, Magoton from Volkswagen also have good performance. PSA has no product in this segment in China so far, and the current compact models are struggling to survive. It’s interesting to see the coming performance of C5 in China. Anyhow it will be a good lesson for those doing marketing in China auto market. Dongfeng Citroen one of the earliest joint venture in China but its market porformance is just ok. Compared with automakers such as Volkswagen, GM and those Japanese automakers, PSA’s performance is really not good. Chinese customers always complian the interior and parts price of French cars. If PSA wants the second plant can run by its fully production, firstly it has to solve the problems of service and spare parts high prices, and then try to improve the quality of its cars’ interior. If it does not know what to do, why not to see the cars by Volkswagen? Article source: Dongfeng Citroen C5 rolled of line
